A Message from Principal Mayo

Good Afternoon AVR Families,

Thank you for continuing to support your student’s success by ensuring they attend school regularly, arrive on time, and are prepared to learn each day. Consistent attendance and family support make a meaningful difference in students’ academic progress and connection to school.

We also appreciate your continued partnership in reinforcing the HCPS cell phone policy. Recently, we have seen an increase in students having personal electronic devices visible during the school day. Please remind your student that cell phones and other personal electronic devices must remain silenced and out of sight from 8:55 a.m. until 3:55 p.m. Only school-issued instructional devices may be used during this time.

Our responsibility is to ensure that every student receives the instruction needed to master course content. Keeping personal devices put away protects instructional time, reduces distractions, and helps create an environment where students can remain focused and engaged. As we continue to address violations, students who refuse to follow reasonable staff directions related to the policy will receive consequences in accordance with the HCPS Code of Conduct. Continued refusal may result in suspension.

Please monitor your student’s academic progress regularly through PowerSchool and visit Schoology to review assignments, course materials, and classroom activities. Our teachers and staff work diligently to provide every student with a quality education, and your involvement helps strengthen that work. If you have questions about your student’s progress, please contact their teacher or school counselor.

This week, we are excited to host 100 Men Day on Thursday, September 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. This event will help us strengthen partnerships with parents, family members, community leaders, and business partners who are interested in encouraging and mentoring our young men. We invite all male parents, relatives, and family friends to join us as we take time to pour positive encouragement into our male students. If you are available, we would love to have you! All participants must bring a valid, physical driver’s license to enter the building.

Our 100 Women Day will be held in October, and additional information will be shared soon.
Thank you for working alongside us to ensure our students feel supported, focused, and prepared for success. When families and schools work together, our students have every opportunity to R.I.S.E.—One Team. One Mission. Endless Possibilities!

With appreciation,
Principal Mayo

Digital Citizenship for Parents
Much has been said about social media bans and reducing screen time for students.
To the parents navigating this terrain, there are powerful, research‑based resources that help children build identities rooted in real‑world experiences rather than whatever an algorithm decides to surface. The debate around social media bans isn’t about shielding children from the future or limiting parts of their identity they haven’t yet explored. It’s about preparing them for that future with purpose, balance, developmentally appropriate material and active engagement. Technology is a permanent, influential force in our world, but it should support education—not shape it prematurely or exploit it. True digital literacy isn’t measured by how early a child can navigate an app. It’s measured by how firmly they’re anchored in the real world before they do. When we prioritize a healthy, offline experience today, we give young people the cognitive stamina, emotional resilience, and grounded sense of self they need to become intentional, empowered digital citizens tomorrow.
